SUMMARY:Exploring Virginia's Waterways and the Underground Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and Book Signing with Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander \n\nThe Slover Library Foundation\, on behalf of the Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series\, proudly presents an enlightening lecture on “Virginia Waterways and the Underground Railroad” with Dr. Cassandra L. Newby-Alexander on Thursday\, Feb. 22\, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at The Slover (235 E. Plume St.\, Norfolk). \nFrom the time enslaved Virginians were first brought to the Jamestown Colony in 1619\, they sought freedom. Acts of self-emancipation were aided by Virginia’s waterways\, which became part of the Underground Railroad network in the years before the Civil War. Watermen who were willing to help escaped slaves made eighteenth-century Norfolk a haven for freedom seekers\, with enslaved individuals serving as conductors\, and black and white sympathizers acting as station masters. \nNewby-Alexander\, Endowed Professor of Virginia Black History and Culture at Norfolk State University\, will share compelling narratives of individuals who navigated these waterways\, seeking humanity’s dream of freedom amidst the harsh realities of enslavement. \nThis event is free and open to the public and includes hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture. Online registration is encouraged but not required at https://bit.ly/3OCgQEv.

SUMMARY:Wreaths Across America - Wreath Retirement Day
DESCRIPTION:The final phase of the WWA project remains to be completed\, and that is to remove the wreaths. Saturday\, January 20\, 2024 at 10:00 am is designated as wreath retirement day at Forest Lawn Cemetery. All wreaths must be removed from the graves and placed next to the roads for pickup by the cemetery staff.\n\n\n\nVolunteers are again needed to accomplish the removal.  This takes much less time than the canvassing and flagging stages.  Volunteers will gather at the back of the cemetery\, close to the maintenance area\, and then move on to collect the wreaths.  They will be placed in piles adjacent to the streets in each cemetery section\, so the maintenance trucks can pick them up.\n\nIt is advisable to wear gloves since the greenery can be prickly. If you have access to a cart or a wagon\, they are very useful when collecting the wreaths.\n\nAgain\, we thank everyone who helped make WWA Day such a success in honoring veterans\, and look forward to seeing those of you who are able to assist with this final task.\n\n\n\nReminders:\n\nMeeting place – back of the cemetery close to the maintenance building\nBring gloves\nBring cart or wagon\, if available\nSnacks and water will be provided.
